Unlocking Words, Unlocking Readers
Sarah Whetsell. Reaches: Struggling readers at Rann Elementary
Grant description
UFLI Word Origins gives students the tools to understand how words work. Students learn about prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word families so they can break apart unfamiliar words, determine meaning, and build vocabulary. This is especially valuable for struggling readers because it gives them strategies they can use when they encounter words they don't know. Rather than memorizing thousands of words, students learn patterns that help unlock new words. Foundation funding will provide teachers with a consistent, research-based resource to strengthen word reading, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our goal is simple: help students understand words so they can better understand what they read.
