Every Voice Belongs in Music

Impact: All Band students in DISD

Right now, only 2% of our band’s music library is made up of works written by women. With your support, we can change that. This grant will allow us to purchase a wide selection of music by female composers, giving our students a chance to learn and perform works that better reflect the world around them. Representation matters—especially when nearly half of our students are girls. Seeing women’s names on their sheet music shows them that creativity has no gender, and hearing these works performed enriches the experience for our entire community. Women are still severely underrepresented in music: less than 5% of the pieces performed by professional groups worldwide are written by women. By building a stronger library of works by female composers, we will help close that gap, inspire our students, and bring new and important voices to our concerts for years to come. Your gift will help ensure that every concert we play celebrates the full spectrum of voices in music—lifting up the often-overlooked contributions of women composers and inspiring our students for years to come.
