Impact: Individual 6th Grade Writing classroom

Middle school students often struggle to sustain focus and stamina during writing instruction. Traditional desks can feel rigid, limiting movement and making it difficult for students with diverse learning needs to engage in extended writing tasks. Research supports that flexible, alternative seating options (e.g., wobble stools, soft seating, standing desks, floor cushions) can improve student attention, motivation, and overall classroom climate. In our writing classroom, students are asked to brainstorm, draft, revise, and share their work daily. A learning environment that promotes comfort, choice, and physical engagement will help reduce restlessness and increase productivity. Alternative seating not only empowers students to make choices about their learning but also supports students with ADHD, sensory needs, and anxiety.
